Gone 4 Weeks today.
If you missed the memorial video, here it is again.

Yesterday morning it was exactly two weeks since I woke from an uncharacteristically deep sleep, to my name being called franticly from the gate. It was 08h03. Or so I thought.

I recognized it was Ellen, Laszlo’s riding buddy, alone at the gate and that that meant something was wrong. Little did I know just how wrong, or how my life had already changed.

Ellen said that Lasz had had a seizure while on his bike, that I had to come now and that she’d wait in the car to drive me to the hospital. I turned back in a daze, realized I had to feed the dogs first and when I was done, whatsapped Ellen to say I was finishing up and would be out soon.

Later, after I’d got to the hospital and been informed that Lasz had had a massive heart-attack and that it had taken at least half an hour to resuscitate him and to expect the worst, I went back and looked at the time I’d sent that Whatsapp. It was 09h06. I was confused. I had been so certain that it had been 08h03 when Ellen woke me.

Afterwards, I found out that Ellen, Gordon and Lasz had split up on their ride just before 08:00 because Ellen wanted to cycle further and that Gordon had made the first missed call to Ellen after Lasz had keeled over on his bike, at 08h06. According to Gordon, 08h03 is probably exactly when Lasz had his heart-attack.
I’ve never been one for mysticism, but I truly find comfort in the belief that Lasz left his body lying in the street at 08h03 and his spirit came directly to me. I must’ve woken up, registered the time and then fallen back asleep.

Also, according to Gordon, Lasz had suddenly slowed down while they were riding. In response to his question as to why he was going so slowly, Lasz’s reply, and last words, before having his heart-attack and never regaining consciousness, were, “We don’t always have to go fast.”

And then everyone’s best cheerleader, the man with the biggest heart, the best laugh, the most indefatigable lust for life and an infinite capacity for love, left us and our lives will never again be the same.
He loved greatly.
He was greatly loved.

Bless you, darling Laszlo Bene. Rest in Peace. We’ll watch over Sass Schultz for you. You are in our hearts, always.

No one accomplishes anything on their own. I have always felt particularly blessed to be surrounded by what I call “My Tribe”.

People and friends, old and new, who have always come together to help each other succeed. We mourn the loss of one of our Tribe – Laszlo Bene – who created Moonshine Spirited Ice Cream.

There was always so much life, and energy, and passion – attributes that came to be embodied by his team. We are so sorry for your loss!! We hope that you are somehow able to keep going with Moonshine Spirited Ice Cream – little spoonfuls of happiness that the world needs now more than ever. A huge virtual hug is sent your way….

On behalf of myself, and the Indigo Burn tribe, deepest condolences!

  1. It’s been almost a year and I had no idea..of his passing. When I found out,I learned to cry for the first time in my life.I sought comfort in the gutteral sounds made by the human body when crying to relief pain and improve blood flow.I went through my own crap..had no phone for most of the year.I last spoke to him in March 2020..I was going abroad on an exciting assignment. We spoke of Moonshine Ice cream and decided my assignment would be great for advertising and launching in those countries. My ticket was bought,I prepared to go back to working full time after 9years,then Laszlo sends me a WhatsApp saying he thought it wouldn’t be possible, because the airports and gates were quickly closing.I said he wasn’t being optimistic and shrugged. An hour later a government department of that country sent me a WhatsApp, cancelling the journey until further notice.I forwarded the poster mesg to Laszlo who did not do the normal, like I told you so..a gem of a man.I net him @Bush Fire 2019..I had been performing earlier on in the day,and was dancing all by myself..he was wearing a fur coat, and I a big fox scarf,it was cold.He came up started dancing with me,and I looked at our clothes and muttered loud enough ‘youre kidding, right sir?’
He smiled and asked why..”I screamed pointing” ‘our clothes,is that why you’re dancing with me’.He just smiled.. unforgettable smile embrossed in my brain. He then offered a drink and he told me about his family and moonshine ice cream. The initial plan was that I model the brand hence he had come over to talk to me,I HAD BIGGER PLANS FOR THE BRAND.I simply said,’I am a little bit bright of mind too, perhaps we can do bigger things”..Sandi we never met,I si,so sorry..!Time heals. To the rest of his friends and family..my deepest condolences. Please Sandi do not give up on Moonshine IceCream..
R.I.P LASZLO BENE my dancing partner. Love Nana
