He was 71 years old.
The beloved philanthropist and businessman’s family announced his death in a statement that read:
Barry Griswell passed away peacfully in his sleep this morning with Michele Griswell at his side. It is hard to express how many lives he touched and what a devoted father he was. Our world will not quite be the same without him.

As chairman and CEO of Principal Financial Group in 2007, he led the company to sign on as title sponsor of the Principal Charity Classic. Every dollar raised, every life touched, and every round of applause owes a little something to Barry. We will miss our true friend and community champion.
The youth and families of the Tokata Youth Center lost a dear friend this week. Barry was a big man with a big heart. He made many lasting impacts here at the Crow Creek Sioux Nation, but especially in impacting the youth.
Barry loved Jesus and we can confidently say, Toksa ake Barry, we will meet again in heaven. Prayers for the family.
