Sad news that John Sawyer Tulsa realtor passed away broke today.
Please say a prayer for the family and friends as you read the tributes below.
Shocked and gutted to hear of the passing of my childhood friend, John Sawyer.
John and I attended Jenks High School together and, although he was a couple of years younger than me, I was jealous of him when I first got to know him.
Already, he was a far better singer, dancer, performer, pianist – everything, really – but we both loved Broadway musicals and our shared dream to one day perform on those stages was the foundation on which we built a wonderful friendship.
My first go at writing an original musical was with John – “Cancellations” (and, to this day, I still remember the opening number we wrote together).
Because John was so talented, he made me step up my game. Cut to New York City 1996 (I think?), John and I got together for lunch while I was on Broadway in “Grease!” and he was about to begin rehearsals for the new Andrew Lloyd Webber/Jim Steinman musical, “Whistle Down The Wind”, directed by Harold Prince, which would have it’s world-premiere in D.C. before coming to Broadway following their out of town tryout.
We couldn’t help but to laugh and feel proud of the fact that these two kids from Tulsa, Oklahoma had somehow managed to make their childhood dreams come true.
Sadly, that show never made it back to Broadway although John did eventually make his Broadway debut in Frank Wildhorn’s “The Civil War” a couple of years later. Sometime after that, John moved back to Tulsa.
Everything happens for a reason, I suppose. John’s star continued to shine in Tulsa on stage, as a teacher, a realtor – basically whatever he set his mind on doing, he did brilliantly.
Although, I wish I had the pleasure of knowing better the man that John Sawyer grew up to be, I will always be grateful for that kid who inspired me and made me work harder to be better in every way.
You will be dearly missed, my friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to John’s family and to everyone whose lives were enriched by his incredible light, talent, and heart. R.I.P., superstar, “and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”!

One of my favorite things about John Sawyer was that he gave you what you needed in the moment to bring out your best.
He pushed me hard and gave me tough love when I was being a sloppy complacent teenager, and was also one of the most nurturing, kind hearted, and supportive adults in my life.
He never talked to me like I was just some kid, he was a friend, a coach, a often my therapist. Tulsa lost someone so so special.
My heart is just broken over the passing of a good friend from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Oh John Sawyer…we had some marvelous times together.
We sang some beautiful duets, had enlightened conversations at your beautiful place and mine …you are a just beautiful man both inside and out. Now you’re singing with the heavenly choir. 🌹
