The Windsor native singer Jean Nichol, real name Louis Simoneau, is survived by his loyal audience, who had followed his journey for many years, but also his spouse, Nancy Goulet, his eight brothers and sisters as well as his four children.

He was the father of Nathalie, born of a first union, as well as of David, Alexandre and Gabriel. He also had two grandchildren and a third to come.

Claude-Luc Simoneau, the artist’s youngest brother saddened by the death, said:

“My brother, he was my idol! I always found that he had a very nice voice, a talent he probably inherited from our mother. I love each of his songs. I even know them all by heart!

“Several people have called me since the death of my brother, and they tell me that they are attached to him. It’s surprising how people become attached to an artist! For many of his fans, Jean Nichol, it was the voice of Quebec.”

Jean Nichol, who had almost 60 years of career, having started singing in clubs and dance halls from the age of 17, leaves behind a rich musical heritage including a dozen albums as well as several successful songs, especially Oh! Lady Mary , Angelique and Without you .

For the one nicknamed the “Tom Jones Quebecois”, his job was much more than a simple profession, it was a passion. His audience was dear to him and he preferred intimate rooms to auditoriums in order to be closer to it.

Réjean Chenard, a musician from East Angus who often accompanied the singer on stage, said:

“He had a kind of magnetism, a talent for capturing the attention of the crowd. When he started to sing, the audience was automatically spellbound by his music.

He was known to be always well dressed, well dressed. He liked a job well done, it was his trademark.”

In 2012 and 2015-2016, Jean Nichol participated in the Idol Tour, notably with Patsy Gallant, Michèle Richard, Ginette Reno, Joël Denis and Renée Martel.

Until recently, he was on the set of the program Tout Simply Country , hosted by Guylaine Tanguay.

Given the Covid19 confinement measures, a ceremony will take place in complete privacy in the chapel of the LeSieur et frères funeral complex in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The public is however invited to attend the ceremony on the web, Sunday May 17 at 2 p.m., simultaneously or in replay, at funeraweb.tv , by entering the name: Jean Nichol.
