Alex Auricchio death, obituary: How Alexander Aurrichio died June 8, 2020 in a cycling accident in Australia’s Northern Territory. He was only 30 years old.
Columbia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Alex Auricchio death in a statement that read:
It is with great sadness that the Columbia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics learned of the death of Alexander Aurrichio ’12CC.
A former standout on both the men’s soccer and baseball teams, Aurrichio was killed Monday in a cycling accident in Australia’s Northern Territory. He was 30 years old.
“Alex’s love and passion for Columbia men’s soccer and his teammates was second to none. When he walked into a room you knew it, and he made you feel it deep into your soul. His personality and smile were even larger than he was. He was a guy who always looked to grow, challenged himself, held guys accountable and only played to win while truly enjoying the challenge and opportunity.
He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.”
Our hearts break for the grieving family, friends and loved ones and we urge that their privacy please be respected.
Northern Territory detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said local police were notified of Alex Auricchio accident on Monday evening, June 8, 2020. Lindner said:
“A cyclist was riding inbound on Gunn Point Rd just prior to the Howard Springs Reserve. A driver in a Nissan Patrol has collided into the rear of him,”
“Tragically, the rider has died at the scene. There were some vehicles travelling near to the crash scene, they were witnesses who observe that crash so they stopped to assist the driver of the Nissan Patrol, who stopped and is assisting us in our inquiries.”
Lindner also confirmed the driver was uninjured and not in custody. He said:
“It’s too early to speculate on any charges.
“I will say that the driver immediately stopped, rendered assistance and has assisted us with our inquiries. They’re not in custody or anything like that.”

Alexander Aurrichio – Lets get Rooch home
Let’s give Rooch the send off he deserves , and get him home to his family
We are all absolutely shattered. The tragic passing of Alex has left a gaping hole in our hearts – but none hurting more then his doting family.
Rooch came to Australia chasing the adventure of a lifetime and my gosh did he live large!
Everyone who has been lucky enough to cross paths with Alex knows just how infectious being in his presence is, and how you immediately become best friends.
Alex’s mum & dad , Lou & Jill, along with his siblings live in New York – the other side of the world – and with this global pandemic really have no way to get here and take Alex home.
We can’t even begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing , having lost a brother and son .. let alone the logistical nightmare that is to come.
They need our help. Please give what you can to ensure we can help the Aurrichio family and get Rooch back to Long Island!
Thanks so much for your help xxx
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
Our deepest condolences and sympathy during this difficult time.
