Gus Lett death, obituary: Gus Lett Michael Jordan security guard died November 2000 after a long battle with lung cancer.
In Jordan’s documentary, “The Last Dance,'”, Gus Lett is described as Michael Jordan’s “protector”.
Before Gus Lett death, Lett was a former Chicago narcotics officer. Prior to his work at Chicago Stadium and heading up Jordan’s security detail, Lett was a former DEA undercover agent from the South Side. He took a bullet in the line of duty.
He had started his career as a patrolman and worked his way up to sergeant in the Chicago police department.
As Jordan’s right hand, he walled the Bulls star off from prying eyes and hands as his fame swelled, peaked and ascended beyond belief. Their relationship dated back to Jordan breaking his foot in his second season.
Gus Lett and Michael Jordan were inseparable.
Lett was there for Jordan when he needed him, especially in the years after his father, James, was murdered in 1993.
According to Lett’s widow in the documentary, Tisher shared how Jordan would call, in tears, as late as 2 a.m. and Lett would always console him and even get up and go see Jordan.

So when Lett was diagnosed with lung cancer, Jordan was there every step of the way — at the hospital, at the Lett household, attending treatments, calling and checking at every turn.
In 1998, Gus Lett had surgery to remove a malignant lesion from his brain and required radiation to get rid of a chest tumor.
It was later revealed that Jordan had helped pay for his medical expenses and ensured that he was admitted to Northwestern Hospital.
Lett returned to the United Center for Game 7 of the Pacers series to great celebration by all who knew him.
