Reggie, a 49ers scout and a former NFL running back, died unexpectedly Saturday April 20th, 2019. He was 50 years old.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Reggie Cobb death in a statement. 49ers general manager John Lynch said in the statement:

“We are devastated by the sudden loss of a tremendous teammate and loyal friend, Reggie Cobb.

Reggie was an enthusiastic and passionate person who had a special ability to brighten up a room with his personality and infectious smile.

“For 10 years, the 49ers were better because of Reggie and these unique qualities that he possessed. He was a top-notch scout and an exemplary man whose years of service to this organization and the National Football League will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this time of mourning.”

Cobb’s colleagues around the NFL and college football are mourning on social media about his unexpected passing,

Cobb scouted for the 49ers for the past 10 years and for other clubs before them. He played in the NFL for seven seasons. He was drafted in the second round by Tampa Bay in 1990 and also played for Green Bay, Jacksonville and the New York Jets.

In college, Cobb finished third on Tennessee’s career rushing list. He was part of the Volunteers’ 100th anniversary team.

Cobb starred at Central High School for four seasons. He played at Tennessee from 1987-89.

Cobb rushed for 2,360 yards and scored 29 total touchdowns, ranking 11th in UT history in rushing yards. His 225 yards against Auburn in 1989 stand as the ninth-most for any player in UT history in a single game.

He led the SEC in touchdowns with 20 in 1987 and rushed for 1,197 yards while collecting All-SEC second-team honors during his freshman season. His 1,721 all-purpose yards that season stood as the UT record until 2012.

Cobb was inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
