We’ve built 2000 houses for teachers – Kano government
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state says his government has built 2000 houses for teachers across the state.
He made this known during the opening ceremony of a two-day NUJ delegates conference in Kano, adding that it is intended to make the teaching profession attractive.
Ganduje said more than 2,000 houses had been completed, out of which about 750 would be inaugurated in the Kano metropolis by President Muhammadu Buhari during his planned visit to the state.
The governor, however said the houses were not free of charge but that the Kano government would provide the enabling environment, through the banks, for the teachers to acquire them.
He also told the gathering that the retirement age of teachers in the state had been increased the retirement from 60 to 65 years to enhance the quality of the teaching profession.
The Kano State government had first announced plans to construct a total of 2,000 housing units in 2016.
The Commissioner of Information, Comrade Muhammad Garba said the units would each cost N2.7 million for the benefit of low and average income earners.
He said the decision to construct the houses was taken following consideration by the government that the houses built by the previous administration were too expensive and not for the masses.
Garba said;“The previous government constructed houses but they are too expensive for people at the grassroots. The prices of those houses range from N5 million, N10 million to N 15million.
Though the project was a laudable one but the houses are too costly. But Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is a grassroots man who always puts the interests of the masses first”.
