The male runner was entered into the half marathon section of the Two Oceans event.
A brief statement from the ultra marathon’s organizers said:
“As we conclude the 2019 edition of the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, we confirm the sad news that a 35-year-old male runner from Cape Town who collapsed in the race today and attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
“Unfortunately he passed away. The deceased runner was participating in his fourth half marathon and an avid runner.
The event started on Newlands Main Road and concluded 56km later on the University of Cape Town’s fields.
The jury is still out on whether marathons are detrimental to the health of runners who take part. The deceased runners medical history is not known to us and we cannot speculate on the actual cause of death.
