Vanna Nguyen and James Le, a man and woman were declared missing on Sept. 2 when Mercer Island police received a complaint about loud noise coming from a boat off the southwest end of the island around 10 p.m.

Cmdr. Jeff Magnan of the Mercer Island police said the police marine unit arrived on scene and found a 20-foot red-and-white pleasure craft adrift with no one aboard, still blasting loud music.

Petty Officer Michael Clark of the U.S. Coast Guard said officers checked the boat and found evidence that a 33-year-old man and 31-year-old woman had been there at some point in the evening, including clothing, two cell phones and the ID cards of the two people whose cell phones were found.

An extensive search by air and water’s surface search was conducted.

Family and friends held search parties in an effort to find them. Police said marine officers spent “many hours” scouring the lake.

Marine officers spent days since using a remote robotic device to search the lake bottom.

The bodies of the 33-year-old man and 31-year-old woman were found Monday evening in 110 feet of water about a mile off the shores of Mercer Island.

Police say there were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play. The King County Medical Examiner’s office will work to confirm the cause of death.

While the medical examiner will have to confirm the identity of those recovered, police have informed the missing boaters’ families of the discovery.

“Our thoughts are with them in this trying time,” Mercer Island police wrote.
