Man allegedly drugs his 12-year old daughter’s friends during sleepover

A 57-year-old man from Lake Oswego, Oregon, has been charged with multiple felonies for allegedly spiking smoothies with sedatives and serving them to his daughter’s 12-year-old friends during a sleepover.

Michael Meyden faces three felony counts each of causing another person to ingest a controlled substance, applying a schedule IV controlled substance to the body of a minor, and delivering a schedule IV controlled substance to a minor, as per court records.

The girls, who were all 12 years old, were hospitalized after the incident and tested positive for benzodiazepine, a drug commonly prescribed for anxiety, including under brand names such as Valium, Xanax, and Klonopin.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Meyden was actively involved in the girls’ activities on the night of the sleepover, taking them for nail treatments and providing dinner. The girls spent most of their time in the basement having a “spa night.”

Before bedtime, Meyden prepared smoothies for the girls, insisting that each girl use a specific colored straw to distinguish their drink. Two girls slept on a pull-out couch, while the others slept in a bedroom in the basement.

One girl reported feeling woozy, hot, and clumsy after consuming two smoothies, ultimately blacking out and experiencing a “thick, deep sleep.” Another girl, who did not consume much of the smoothie, felt frightened for her friends’ safety and frantically contacted her parents and friends to pick her up.

Allegedly, Meyden went downstairs multiple times, attempting to separate the girls and even checking if one of them was soundly asleep.

Concerned for her friend, one girl texted her mother, pleading for immediate pickup due to feeling unsafe.

Eventually, the frightened girls were picked up by parents and a family friend, leading to Meyden’s arrest.

Meyden’s attorney, Mark Cogan, emphasized his client’s presumption of innocence and urged people to reserve judgment until all the facts are known.

The case highlights the potential dangers that unsuspecting victims can face and serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution in social situations, even within seemingly safe environments.
