The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States and this company usually requires the services of skilled and qualified readers to read and score student essays for the ACT Writing Test.

The ACT Writing Test assesses individual’s writing skills and is often taken alongside other reading or English exams.

As an ACT reader, essay scoring takes place online and is facilitated by an Electronic Performance Evaluation Network (ePEN) System designed by Pearson Educational Measurement. This means you can view and grade essays from anywhere on any personal computer with an Internet connection at any time.Writing Test essays are scored at intervals throughout the year.

Your compensation as an ACT reader is performance based. Scorers can earn $12/hour or more based on a combination of performance indicators, including quality and rate.

To be eligible to work here, prospective applicants are required to have:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Current teaching experience (preferred)
  • Experience teaching high school English to juniors and seniors (preferred)
  • U.S. citizenship, resident alien status, or authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Reside in the U.S.

Educational Testing Service (ETS, according to Wikipedia, was founded in 1947 and is the world’s largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization. For this company, you can become a constructed-response scoring professional for ETS.

For you to be considered for Online Scoring at ETS, you will need to include in your application the following:

  • a CV/resumé that highlights chronologically your most recent experience or teaching experience.

MI hires readers/evaluators to score tests on a project-by-project basis and these individuals are required to maintain strict guidelines for accuracy and productivity. Readers/Evaluators receive paid training at the beginning of each project. All positions are remote/work from home.

If you have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, you may be qualified to join their staff as a reader/evaluator. Reports say their pay may be around $11 per hour.

Write Score is a student portal, web application for students to take state aligned assessments. And as a Write Score professional scorer, you will be reading and scoring extended writings written by students of elementary, middle or high school ages. Reports say this work is extremely rewarding and
engaging as you get an insight into the minds of young thinkers and get to view the world through their eyes while grading their work.

To apply for this job, this company on their website says they are looking for a conscientious person who will read and score students’ writings. Applicants first get an orientation, pass the qualifying skill level, and then evaluate/score actual students’ responses.

During the orientation, applicants analyze student assignments/papers, learn the scoring/evaluation systems, score practice papers, and then discuss results with senior instructors.

In addition, all applicants are required to have a two-year college degree and pass a qualifying test in order to become a scorer.

Write Score has scorer positions available throughout the school year and reports say pay is around $10 to $15 per hour depending on the specific job.

Pearson partners with educators to develop new and personalized ways of learning through effective, scalable assessments. At this company, positions offered to applicants include Test Scorers and Supervisors that work remotely. Most temporary positions are available at this company during peak months of February through June.

As a scorer with this company, you will work from your home and evaluate student responses to subject-related open-ended questions according to a customer supplied scoring guide. Candidates must qualify after completion of training in order to begin scoring.

Pearson offers compensation packages that reward exceptional quality and productivity. Scoring is generally compensated at a wage of $15/hour with additional incentives paid based on daily and weekly performance (up to $150 per week).
