Man attacked by angry mob in Lagos for vandalising vehicles
An angry mob descended on a suspected thief in the Victoria Island of Lagos State for allegedly vandalising vehicles on A.J. Marinho Drive.
The man was accused of stealing side mirrors from vehicles parked on the street on Tuesday, when he was caught, pursued and beaten.
A security man, identified only as Ali, said vandalising of vehicles had become a norm in the area.
He added that generator cables were also not safe as thieves vandalised equipment to steal cables and resell.
Ali said, “I’m very happy we caught one of the thieves today. He was stylishly loosening the side mirror of one of the cars parked before a colleague of mine spotted him and we all chased him down the street.
“They have been vandalising cars here almost every day. And the offices along the street will be pointing fingers at the security men in the area, and it will look like we are not doing our jobs.”
Ali said the side mirrors of two Toyota Camry cars had been removed and the man was caught while trying to loosen the side mirror of the third car.
He added, “While we were chasing him, he threw the nylon where he put the side mirrors in the bush, but we will make sure he produces them before we release him.”
A lady, who simply gave her name as Funmi, who works with a law firm on the street, said two of her colleagues’ vehicles were vandalised last week.
She added, “One of the Toyota Camry cars that was vandalised today belongs to another of my colleagues. We had to write to the management of the building just a few days back to complain about the rate of vandalism on our street. It has become very worrisome.”
It was gathered that two armed policemen arrived at the scene and restored calm before arresting the alleged thief.
