Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina cause of death was a brief illness less than three years after he announced HIV- positive.
Binyavanga Wainaina publicly announced that he was gay in 2014 when he tweeted:
“I am, for anybody confused or in doubt, a homosexual. Gay, and quite happy.” He tweeted.
Binyavanga Wainaina died May 21, 2019 at a Nairobi hospital at a few minutes past 10pm (19:00 GMT)

News that Kenyan author and activist Binyavanga Wainaina has died was announced by literary magazine Kwani, a publication Binyavanga founded announced.
The chairman of the Nairobi-based magazine told The Daily Nation newspaper that Wainaina passed away following a short illness. He was 48 years old.
Before Binyavanga Wainaina death yesterday, in November 2015, he had suffered a stroke.
Wainaina had won the Caine Prize for African Writing for his short story Discovering Home in 2002.
Time Magazine in 2014 included Wainaina in its list of the Most Influential People in the World.
According to author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, he “demystified and humanized homosexuality.” She said:
Wainaina was one of the first high-profile Kenyans to openly declare he was gay and “he felt an obligation to chip away at the shame” that people felt about being gay.
Binyavanga Wainaina, last year announced his plans to marry his long-time partner at a wedding in South Africa. The announcement divided opinion in Kenya where homosexual acts are illegal.
Binyavanga’s brother James Wainaina told the BBC that his family wants to celebrate his life.
“We are in a life celebration mood, we’re looking at this from a human level; it’s a human story. Allow that humanness to shine, people are hurting,” he said.
