Banana Island: Many feared dead as building collapses

A building has collapsed on Banana Island in Lagos, trapping many people inside.

The incident happened on Wednesday around past 3 pm after many of the construction workers on site had closed for the day.

Some of them were however injured as a result of the collapse.

The spokesperson for the Lagos Fire Service and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiri, confirmed the incident.

He said, “We got a call around 3:58 pm. We are currently trying to ascertain the claim that no one was under the rubble.”

The island, which is one of the most expensive places to live in Africa, is an artificial island off the foreshore of Ikoyi, Lagos. The name of the posh island derives from the curvature of its shape.
