Zarren Garner: This is the mugshot of UGA shooting suspect.
20 year old Zarren Garner is accused of shooting and robbing UGA student Tate Prezzano in Athens Monday. He was arrested by police in Gwinnett County Tuesday morning.
Garner has been charged with two counts of armed robbery and two counts of aggravated assault.
Police were called to the shooting at a bus stop on South Milledge Avenue near the 10 Loop just after 7:15 a.m. Monday.
When police arrived, they found Tate Prezzano, 22, on the ground. Tate had been shot multiple times and was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Tate Prezzano is a junior communications major at UGA, he also played lacrosse at Cambridge High School in Milton, Georgia.
According to police, not long before that shooting, another student had also been robbed at a nearby apartment complex. The second student was robbed at gunpoint moments before Prezzano was shot, but that student was not hurt and was able to give police a description of the robber.
On Monday, police released a sketch of Tate’s suspected shooter, who they said was also connected to the armed robbery of the UGA student.
Investigators said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation sketch they released Monday led right to Garner. The sketch made by GBI forensic sketch artist Kelly Lawson was so accurate that people who knew Garner started calling in tips and leads.
Athens-Clarke County police Chief Cleveland Spruill said the tips led directly to tracking down Garner to a home in Gwinnett County. Police said Garner chopped off his distinctive hairstyle in an attempt to hide.
Tate Prezzano’s high school on Monday evening said Prezzano’s condition had stabilized and he is expected to make a full recovery. Tate’s father, Dobbin Prezzano, said at a news conference Tuesday morning:
“We’re blessed and thankful for the conversation we’re having today. It could have been a lot different.”
