Traders at Yaba market harass women protesting against sexual harassment

The protesters/campaigners were called various names as Olosho, Ashewo, lesbian and so on

One of the “Stop Touching Us” campaigners, Chi Amaka narrated their bad experience with the Yaba market traders, especially the male folks, during their campaign.
Read the story as narrated by Chi Amaka, a lady who shared the videos.

“An interesting day today guys. I was at the #MarketMarchYaba and just because we said “stop touching us”, they booed us, called us prostitutes, lesbians and jobless people. They also threw pure water at us, one landed right on my chest. A guy even touched me TWICE!!!

Nothing to see here at all, just being called ashawo . I love it when men try to prove they are not trash by you know being TRASH. #MarketMarchYaba

I forgot this part. “How dare you say no to harassment? Holy Ghooooost fire”

They said a lot of things I’ve seen here from “educated men”.

If you don’t want us touch you dress well.
Who are you that we shouldn’t touch you.
If you don’t want us to touch you don’t come here.
You should be fighting for more important things (this made me laugh)..

You go marry yourself?
You sef don’t touch us (street whataboutism)
You no dey Bleep?
I get your type for house
You no even fine.
#MarketMarchYaba

“Ashawo, they no dey work”

Another “Stop Touching Us” campaigner, Moromoke @mo_romoke recounts their ordeal too.

She wrote:

“#MarketMarchYaba was a success! The reaction was unexpected for me. Like the Yaba boys threw water and stones at us, it was as if we unleashed the beast in them and today I saw the physical demonstration of mysogyny, they got aggressive and resorted to physical abuse.”

Another campaigner, Lisa @LisaOnyimonyi said:

” And what we’ve learned today from this march is:
1. Those men feel entitled to touch a woman.
2. They won’t take responsibility for their actions.
3. They hate women. Clearly.
4. They’re angry women are finally speaking up against the harassment.
#MarketMarchYaba”

  4. This is a good protest I really love it let women do something, sexual abuse is becoming something else in the world

  5. The way u present ursef, determine the way u will b addressed. They cause all this wahala themselves. Women dress responsible.

  6. Lolz, there is nothing provoking in their protest, they should have support them to ride in because this sexual harrassment is becoming something else.

  7. I think these ladies got points, the way those guys touches the opposite sex in the market it’s just too embarrassing and if the female complains they guys would act like they want to hit them…. They are there to trade and not to touch people, some of those women are married.

  8. You don’t want to be touch, Even Jesus was touched by an unclean woman.so put away the spirit of pride because that is the spirit of devil.

  9. Hmmmm, will they marry themselves? Beside, a woman that has a good job won’t join them. Though harrassing women is not good

  10. I support this protest , enough of sexual harassment.,it must stop.ladies too should stop dressing to kill

  11. This campaigns is meaningful to the world, you should have campaign for better things and not constituting nuisance

  12. They have every right to protest…at least the government will hear their cry and the rate of sexual harrasment and child advise to the greatly reduced…

  13. Some Men are very wicked, what is they business in that protest, this women has right to protest against sexual harassment, because is too much nowadays

  14. To avoid been harassed then dress well coz men are moved by what they see, its rare to see a guy harass a decently dressed lady. Must you wear stuffs that pops up your boobs and ass?

  15. These women are people’s wives, stop touching them because they came to the market to buy from you

  16. This women did a great job even thoug it won’t touch the guys in thier heart…sexual harrasment is too much in this country abeg

  17. protesting is a very good thing, the rate at which sexual harassment takes place is just too much, they should do something about it.and for the traders whi harrases the protester are idiot.

  18. Truth is better cause no one wants to hear the truth instead of them supporting the woman they are doing otherwise God have mercy

  19. They are doing the right thing that really matters to them but is very wrong for the male traders molesting them for campaigning against sexual harassment.

  20. The rate at which these traders feel that they are entitled to touch women is alarming, the earlier it’s controlled the better

  21. Sometimes some people can be so daft…. What’s wrong with someone campaigning against sexual harassment again…. Imagine such nonsense even from fellow women…. But those girls would have carried some security agents along with them….. How wish they wouldn’t have dare embarrass them

  22. I have experienced this many times, not only in yaba but in other crowded markets in Nigeria, this really have to stop

  23. Wonder shall never end ,women demonstrating that they don’t want the men to touch them is a good thing ,that is why the rate of tape is so high in the society because they are just thinking what they are doing is the right thing and if the government will not do any thing .they should get ready for another Sodom and gomorra soon.

  24. Women you people did well by marching round the market and telling them how you people feel kudos to your courage

  25. Really good thing protesting against sexual harassment because the rate in which some ladies and women are been harassed is much

  26. Harassing them is not good but I would advice that we girls should move away from all these things that is bringing us ebarasment in the environment

  27. Is good they do what they did.. Is called self control so that guys cannot be rude when it comes to women thing

  28. Hahaha, this is very funny, being friendly to one another is what I saw here but the women has seen wrong.

  29. I see no reason for the harassment. …it was a peaceful protest so I don’t see why they should be harassed. ….the police and lagos state government should look into this

  30. Even if men comply with their protest they won’t be fine with it because they dress well in other to see a guy that will call their attention

  31. It was a peaceful protest, they shouldn’t have been treated or spoken to like that by the yaba market men, everybody should know their boundaries please.

  32. The traders are wrong those woman are just passing out information. So its there choice to go any were

  33. Yes, the women have the right of choice on who touch them and the right to also protest against molestation from the men. Throwing things at them was another low and irresponsible on the male traders.

  34. The rate of sexual harassment in this country is truely on the increase. The male folks should just be warned

  35. Yes they have to draw they attention to stop harassment and they should dress decent that will work SEXUAL HARASSMENT MOST STOP

  36. There should have been enough security around to ensure the process went smoothly. Because men can be dangerous atimes.
See that one face sef as if na him right.

  37. If does ladies don’t want harassment they should dress normal.. They should stop wearing all this stupid dress

  38. What a good protest by the trades those boys or men are those who et involved in such act so am not surprised at all, kudos to the women

  39. The rate at which sexual harassment takes place is just too much, they should even continue protesting and seek protection from the law.

  40. I don’t think this people have their own work because for them to be going around, it can never change anything in our country.

  41. The traders should stop torching them. These are iliterate fools who torch ladies that comes to buy goods in yaba.

  42. All does things they’re doing is nonsense. If you want protest then protest yourself. Is that what’s next?

  43. I think there is violation women’s right law. or is it that there are not married or dont’t have sisters

  44. Wat thy are doin is nonsense if thy wnt to protect them self thy should all wat thy are doin is NT proper

  45. Looool…..I think this guys are right about about what they said,if you don’t want men to touch you change the way you dress, your dressings cause the touching and at the other side are guys lesbian….you should made clear of what your campaigns about

  46. It is stupid men and those that like assaulting women will say they are jobless because they are campaigning . I hope when they have daughters or sister that complains about sexual harrassment that will open their eyes to what women are facing

  47. That’s clearly nonsense, so men now feel entitled to every female, its not their fault, its our customs and traditions that belittled women in the first place.

  48. But some men behave like Animals ooo.Why will a lady be walking on way, and a guy will just come and hit her on her bum bum,is that normal? Okay, i agree that some of the girls cause this to their selves by the way they dress but even the ones that dresses responsibly, the guys still touch them wrongly. If a guy calls a girl and the girl does not want to answer then,,let her be.

  49. That’s the problem these women will continue to face, these men don’t know what abuse or embarrassment means they just do whatever they like because they always gets away with them. Until government sets strict measures to punish offenders and also sensitize the public on these issues, there’ll always be problems.

  50. Those yaba traders should be dealt with. They should put themselves in the shoes of those ladies and know how it feels like to be sexually assaulted

  51. Seriously i think the story is not complete who is touching who, because i dont understand. Men touching woman for what did they know each other before? Or what

  52. that is an illiteracy manner must you touch a woman that is not belong to you

Lagos state Government should do something about that

  53. Sexual abuse is becoming something else in the world The way u present ursef, determine the way you will be addressed

  54. Good protesting, all this still boils down to one thing, boys should be well groomed. because in family today …ladies are groomed leaving the boys to behave as they like…both should be well groomed please.

  55. Since they have the right to protest why will men disgrace themselves by calling them sort of names? It’s really not fair.

  56. It’s good to protest against sexual harassment, but women should try as much as possible to dress decently when going out.

  57. I see no reason why matured women will be protesting for rubbish. Under this hot sun they are ranting for nothing

  58. Those yaba traders should be dealt with. They should put themselves in the shoes of those ladies and know how it feels like to be sexually assaulted

  59. They are not talking rubbish and they are not jobless, men should should learn to let women be they have no control over them

  60. That’s clearly nonsense, so men now feel entitled to every female, its not their fault, its our customs and traditions that belittled women in the first place.

  61. They are there to trade and not to touch people, some of those women are married it’s just too embarrassing and if the female complains the guys would act like they want to hit them

  62. I think the protest was just some unnecessary public disturbances and act of joblessness. They got what they deserved from the market women

  63. They are right in their protest, women sexual harassment is bad, even God doesn’t support it. Why the harassment by the traders?

  64. This protest is a nice idea….. And one thing we should know is that it’s not only ladies who dress bad that these things affect, we should just pray not to fall into the hands of these evil men

  65. Harassing women is wrong but it is a tradition…Traders have used it to get customer over the years. This will not stop abruptly but it’s a gradual process.

  66. No responsible man will touch a lady without her consent. It is a total sexual harassment. Some men need to be enlightened about this sexual harassment. Government needs to interven. Any man that touch my woman will hear it.

  67. They have the right to protest
Sexual Harassment isn’t healthy for the victims as it affects them psychologically

  68. will they marry themselves? Beside, a woman that has a good job won’t join them. Though harrassing women is not good

  69. Anyime saying dey dnt av work will only be d guys y?? Cuz dey dnt knw wat women re passing tru. After all u re nt feeling it I dnt blame u. Plss carry waka jare wat dey re doing is wrong it is time for d women to speak up

  70. think these ladies got points, the way those guys touches the opposite sex in the market it’s just too embarrassing and if the female complains they guys would act like they want to hit them…. They are there to trade and not to touch people, some of those women are married.

  71. Mehn… I don’t know what to say on this one o…. But I think the guys should have acted more matured. Why stone them? I know they wouldn’t have acted against it if a female relative of theirs have been sexually abused before

  72. I don’t think that there is something wrong with their protest because the rate of this sexual harassment and rape is going on now if something is not done quickly it may go beyond control.

  73. Why fight against them the protest is called for with the alarming rate of sexual molestation especially from family members. All the men fighting against them are guilty of the offence

  74. Why are this traders so mean?, they should br arrested..I dont see anything wrong with the women actions, they showcase how they felt…And i am glad women are now speaking out.

  75. The market traders would have allowed the protest to go on successfully. Sexual harassment is becoming a norm in this country.

  76. Throwing stone and pure water at them show how irresponsible they are,I don’t know if they even have a mother or sister at home

  77. People saying they’re jobless,i pray you don’t fall victim o. This is were the issue of rape start from. Those men should be arrested pls

  78. Sexual abuse is becoming high in Nigeria, going against it is not a crime, there is room for freedom of speech .

  79. Its there right to protest but this market people must have been bored or had no sales to have been harassing them.

  80. This issue of sexual harassment is becoming more obvious nowadays, it has now gotten to the market, sexual harassment must stop by force, it’s evil and it must stop

  81. The constitution of Nigeria clearly states that citizens have the right to protest in a peaceful manner i see no reason for doing such against them.

  82. Every market shall law guiding them prescribing punishment for such offender. It’s not good that a customer will come to the market to buy something only to be embarrassed by the sellers.

  83. The protest is a welcomed one women should speak out
All these inhuman treatment against women should stop

  84. All wat i we advice does women to do it that dey should stop wearing cloths dat we show all their body part to man, also dey should stop sagging their breast

  85. Please government help in this case women continue your protest for do not mind about what they say no matter how discouraging it may be.

  86. Exactly, the men folk in Nigeria still see women as second class citizens even the enlightened ones. We are still in dark ages in this country o

  87. This is funny
All these people that like touching
    Not your size. Hahaha
    Not your spec. Chain

But sexual assault should be stopped anyways

  88. I support the women in their protest. So that the government will do something about it. Say no to women/girls harassment

  89. If anybody is condeming the actions of these women, I wish the person should witness the harassement these traders used to met out to these ladies. They are entitled to their opinions and it is their rights.

  90. Why would men go about harassing women do they forget they have their own mother’s and sisters at home, think of the women you are harassing as your mum or your sisters
    Is not proper

  91. Nigerian people oo still involved in a dirty act like dis sexual harassment and rape every where pls let put a stop to it

  92. Is the fact ooo….thats so common about those yaba market boys….I dont know they’d be woman that will stand up for others to fight against it….it has to stop…it’s uncalled for

  93. i guess the woman is right, most of men now adays are motherfucker, they are always guilty. that is good for him

  94. Am in support of the women. The fact that they didn’t dress well doesn’t give any man the right to touch them, it is filthiness! Why must a man touch a woman that is not his wife. The women and ladies too shouldn’t dress seductively to tempt the men!

  95. I agree with what the women On this,,,,,, I don’t want my sisters, niece or daughter to be harassed in the future

  96. Protest is not the best way to solve issues again so they should be no protest except when approved by the law

  97. Them, booing u simply means it’s their right to molest u women careless… It is wrong.. So women can’t stand against what they hate right?

  98. They should stop harassing the women that’s what the ladies want. It is not a bad thing , the men folk see as a free world.

  99. it’s like touching people is their trade mark… It’s so disgusting and annoying touching a female in the market all in the name of come and buy from me

  100. I think before this women took to protest they have suffered some abuse or seen it happened and they are fed up. They do not want it to contiue.

  101. I think before this women took to protest they have suffered some abuse or seen it happened and they are fed up. They do not want it to contiue again.

  102. I’m not against them protesting, the problem is that most of them are the reason for the harassment most of them don’t dress to cover themselves

  103. We are protesting which is a good thing, but we also need to fight the root cause of the problem causing the sexual harassment. The way we dress, were we are seen, the association we keep matters also.

  104. Thats y i hate that Yaba market too much Harassment.if i have the power i will clear that yaba market

  105. I believe there protest will yield positive result and they should start with themselves by not wearing indiscent dress

  106. They need to protest but they should have done that with security agents around to deal with the kind of actions taken against them.

  107. Whats the point of harassing them? Are they in support of sexual harassment?
Its a free world. Let them be.

  108. Harassment should stop. The protest is a well come development.they do it in big market..touching people, women especially, as advert to come and buy their goods….rape is on the rise.

  109. Eyah this is so you Hong sexual harassment is turning into something else and they hbeeall the right to protest against such

  110. The rate at which all these traders are touching women in the market is annoying most of these ladies are married

  111. The women need to get the police involve. This trash of sexual harassment need to stop. What’s all this! It is mostly from Illiterate traders

  112. Lol.. All these stupid market boys
Sexual harassment is very common these days
I don’t see anything wrong in the women protesting against it…
Does market boys need to be caution

  113. Nice protest at least this will reduce the harassment from all this guys in Yaba market especially at the railway line.

  114. THIs is insane, so yhese men feel that is there right to be touching any woman that come to yaba? if not they wouldnt have throwing water at them as they were protesting

  115. I picked one statement from that post. IF YOU DON’T WANT US TO TOUCH YOU DRESS WELL. This shows that the women in the area don’t dress well. And if that’s the case, what do u expect… My dear lovely sisters, please to invite the devil and when he comes you start shouting. Please respect yourselves.

  116. Sexual harassment is never good and we must say no to that well I think everybody have the right to exercise there freedom of speech……Although nothing concern me sha

  117. I’m glad this unleashing the ugly side in these men. Any foolish man who tries sexual harassment should be arrested and remanded in prison.

  118. Sexual harassment is a bad omen. The women a re very right in what they are doing. Those people trying to stop dem by harassing dem are stupid

  119. That was a good move though, yaba market guys harrass ladies too much all in the name of wooing u to buy from them they pull and do all sort of things if u complain they start insulting u. I’m not surprised at this their reaction

  120. Your protest is good, but can not be completed without good and decent dressing because the way you dress that is the way you will be addressed

  121. I love these these campaign, its so annoying the way the idiots harrass women n also touch dem all in d name of customers I hate dat it’s not fair at all

  122. The way u present ursef, determine the way u will b addressed. They cause all this wahala themselves. Women dress responsible.

  123. Yaba problem as been there for a long time.i have been a victim , it’s not right and should be supported..thank you ladies

  124. Don’t know why they are being criticised here for doing something good. Any one speaking ill about this protest are cowards and women molesters. Look at there comments so disgusting. Shame on them.

  125. This is a good demonstration starting from the grassroots so that d message can b pass to all cos sexual harassment now rampant

  126. I believe the way we dress is the way we are addressed. These women should be properly dressed to avoid harassment

  127. they were on a peaceful protest and its their right, so why the needless assault against them? we need people to assault boko haram if you wanto fight please o.

  128. That booing was too mild
Why not first educate the females who dress naked on the street first
As if the cause of something is dealt with
    The consequence is quenched
I learnt contrary to what you learnt
    You guys are jobless
    Attention finders
    Promoting lesbianism
    Possibly lesbians
Fighting for a course not well structured by tackling the root cause etc
Most if them lack respect and they want to be kings and Queens
Go and learn from Annie Idibia

  129. This yaba men are really something else what kind oof thing is this is not by force to sleep or touch a woman am Happy the women took such step today, from the look of things they now see it as their right to harass women at their own will
