The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off yesterday with the host nation, Russia winning Saudi Arabia to a 5-0 defeat.

Aside Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Teranga Lions of Senegal Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco are also representing Africa in the World Cup.

Egypt has played their first match and they lost to Uruguay today.

The Super Eagles are in Group D with Croatia, Argentina and Iceland and will begin their group campaign against Croatia on Saturday.

Senegal in the other hand will be up against Colombia, Japan and Poland in Group H.

And the 57-year-old former Ghanaian international now turned Ghana coach said the trio of Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt will also perform but singled out Nigeria and Senegal for special mention.

He told Soccernet,

“Most of the African countries at the World Cup have got very young squads. And I believe they can surprise many at the tournament.

“Nigeria and Senegal are doing well with young players who want to achieve something.

“They only need the right mentality for the tournament and they can cause a surprise.”

Super Eagles Legend and Former Nigerian captain, Austin Okocha has predicted that Nigeria and Argentina will qualify from Group D of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Okocha stated this while speaking as an analyst on SuperSport.

“For the first time, we are going into such a tournament without bonus issues, without financial issues, hopefully with this, there will be a sustained team spirit that will get Eagles through the knockout stages.

“I know Argentina can and why I believe Nigeria can also is that things are changing, for a very long time, we have not had a very consistent team but now the new manager has gotten young and experienced players to play together as a team and I see things are changing.

“Yes, our expectations are high which is expected when we have such array of talents, but the issues have been off the pitch, we must give kudos to the Nigeria Football Federation and the players’ managers for doing a good job,”
