‘We are no longer friends and I felt uncomfortable’ -Rihanna on Drake’s love speech

30-year-old American songstress, Rihanna, who sat for an interview for the June 2018 issue of Vogue Magazine, spoke about the huge success of her Fenty beauty line, the upcoming Met Gala – and her relationship with fellow artist Drake.

Rihanna also revealed that her follow-up album to 2016’s Anti will be heavily reggae-influenced. Though it was deemed “too early” to list all of her collaborators, Rihanna said one influence is likely Supa Dups – the Jamaican producer known for working with dancehall icons Beenie Man, Sean Paul and Elephant Man.

The singer also talked about winning the Vanguard award at the MTV VMAs, after being snubbed by the Grammys for her record Anti. It will be recalled that during the honour, she was presented with the award by rapper Drake while he professed “his undying love for her on live TV.”

At the time, Drake called Rihanna one of his “best friends” and said he’s been in love with her since he was 22 years old. According to Rihanna, they’re not as close as they used to be. Though she was happy to receive the award that night, she admitted that Drake’s heartfelt speech made her feel “uncomfortable.”

“The VMAs is such a fan-focused awards show, so having that energy around me, and knowing the people who had received the award in the past, made it feel like a big deal,” she said.

“Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments. I don’t like to be put on blast.”

Rihanna then clarified their current status. She said: “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”

Rihanna also discussed her forthcoming lingerie line Savage x Fenty in the interview.

“As a black woman, I could not live with myself if I didn’t do that,” she says. “But what I didn’t anticipate was the way people would get emotional about finding their complexion on the shelf, that this would be a groundbreaking moment.”

Savage x Fenty will be released in an online partnership with TechStyle on May 11.
