The Lagos State Police has arraigned 21-year-old university student, Opemiposi Okunuga, who allegedly stole his neighbour’s car and sold it, before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on one count charge of stealing.

Though the University student pleaded not guilty to the charge, however the police prosecutor, Sergeant Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 1 at his residence at Oke-Odo, Abule- Egba, a Lagos suburb.

It was also gathered that the value of the car the suspect stole which belonged to the complainant, Mr. Ola Oladipupo, is yet to be ascertained.

“The complainant parked his car in the compound and the accused towed it at night to an unknown location.

“The complainant discovered in the morning that his Mazda car was missing from where it was parked.

“He raised the alarm and a neighbour told him that he saw the accused towing the car away from the compound,” Awase said.

In his confessional statement however to the police, Okunuga admitted that he sold the car at Abule-Egba for N120,000 and all efforts to trace the buyer were unsuccessful. The offence contravened Section 287 (5b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

NAN reported that the accused was granted bail of of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, by the Magistrate, Mrs. F.F. George. She further stated that the sureties should be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government, as she adjourned the case till May 23 for mention.

This is coming few months after 26 – year – old student of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Johnbosco Ashiegbu, and 34-year – old Chinonso Ewurum, were arrested by operatives of Special Anti -Robbery Squad in Imo State for allegedly stealing two vehicles.

The police claimed that the vehicles stolen by Ashiegbu and Ewurum included a N 19m Hilux van belonging to the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, adding that the suspects sold the vehicle to one Nnamdi Ejinkeonye in Onitsha for N 300,000.
