Few days ago, we reported that former US first lady Barbara Bush was dead. Barbara who died on Tuesday last week at the age of 92, was the matriarchal figure of a political dynasty that included two presidents – her husband George HW Bush and son George W Bush.
Former first lady Barbara Bush was laid to rest at her husband’s presidential library in Texas, in a funeral that was attended by 1,500 people on Saturday in Houston.
Family spokesman Jim McGrath said the ceremony was ‘a very brief but poignant and beautiful ending to a very moving and incredible day’.
‘It would have been exactly what Barbara Bush wanted,’ McGrath added.
The elder Bush and the couple’s son, former president George W. Bush, were among four former US presidents at the funeral service.
Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were in attendance, along with four former first ladies. Former first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton attended the service and were joined by current First Lady Melania Trump.
DailyMail reported that President Donald Trump was not present at the funeral, but instead watched from Mar-a-Lago out of ‘respect’ for the Bush family and to ‘avoid disruptions due to added security’. George H.W. Bush honored his wife’s work promoting literacy with a subtle fashion statement: socks covered in books.
Barbara Bush was buried in a gated plot at her husband’s presidential library at Texas A&M University in College Station, which is about 100 miles from Houston.
The couple’s daughter Robin is also buried there. She was three years old when she died of leukemia in 1953. Hundreds of people lined both sides of the street when the funeral procession passed.
The motorcade left Houston following the private funeral at the St. Martin’s Episcopal Church where Barbara and her husband regularly attended. Several dozen people watched from a parking garage across the street from the university’s football and baseball stadiums, which were draped in a large American flag and a Texas flag.
