The supremacy fight which caused pandemonium in the area, as students, as well as worshippers at a nearby church, scampered for safety, started at a students’ hostel, Delight, in front of the university’s main gate.

Punch reported that it took a police detachment from the Anti-Cultism Unit of the state police command and men of the Orji Police Division for normalcy to return.

“The gun duel between the rival cult members lasted for almost two hours.

“The cult members were just shooting one another. They are students of Imo State University, Owerri.

“Nobody can immediately ascertain the actual cause of the clash, but the shooting started at Delight Hostel in front of IMSU gate” a source said.

It was further gathered that the altercation degenerated to a full scale war, after rival cult members who were initially started exchanging words at the hostel brought out their weapons, including firearms.

A police source who confirmed the report, said the police had arrested some of the cult members.

He said, “They are in police custody at the Orji Police Division. We are still combing the university for the ones on the run.”

This is not the first IMSU Cult members will be involved in a supremacy fight, as in 2017 it was reported that a fresh graduate of Political Science and Public Administration of Imo State University, Owerri, Emeka Ndubueze, was shot dead.

Ndubueze, popularly known as Jayboy, hailed from Amaigbo in the Nwangele Local Government Area of the state and was waiting for a call up for this year’s National Youth Service Corps programme.

The 22-year-old was shot dead around 10:30pm on Wednesday by unidentified cultists operating on the campus. Students who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Punch’s correspondent that the deceased was apparently the target of his killers as they approached him directly and shot him on the chest repeatedly before taking to their heels.

They linked the killing to the cult war between rival confraternities on the campus, which had claimed the lives of some students.
