Few week after the Lagos state deputy police public relations officer, Iheanachor Ifeanyi Omuta informed the public that it is not a crime to wear a tattoo or a certain hairstyle, a Nigerian Twitter user who was extorted by policemen over his dreadlocks, took to the platform to narrate his story.
Twitter user @TODYwa who noted that he has heard stories of illegal arrest and extortion by Nigerian police officers, he is a victim and has proof. His tweets reads;
I’ve heard stories of how the Nigerian police go around and arrest people and extort them for no just reason. I was a victim today and I have proof.
I was walking with someone along Aborishade Road Lawanson when I was stopped by men of
@PoliceNG ‘Anti cultisim unit’ – Cele Police station and bundled into a bus which had some other people they’ve picked up along the way in it…
I politely asked the officer why I was being arrested and he said it’s because I don’t look responsible, (that’s because of my dreadlocks)..that I was a suspect.. I told him I had an ID and that I didn’t live far away.. but he was not interested in all that..
I was taking from Lawanson to Cele Police station.. I stayed calm all through the ride as they picked up other victims along the way..
when we got to the station I was treated like a criminal, I was asked to take off my blet, shoe and t-shirt. I was manhandled be and officer as he asked about my locs and why I had it. I said it was my choice of hairstyle.
But he was having none of it and said that was my crime, that they had orders to pick up people with locs and I was taken to cell.. At this point I had called my Dad and told him about the situation.
I had also given my statement about the situation to another officer. as a concerned father all he wanted was to get me out of there a quick as possible so the matter won’t drag long.. And as your officers do, they negotiated a sum to have me released for my crime of having locs.(I have this on tape!)
@PoliceNG_PCRRU is it a crime to have locs in Lagos? And what are the next steps to take to help aid your investigation?
