Joseph McDaniels, his wife Althea and their daughter Christine were shot to death late Thursday night at their home in southwest Denver.

Police responded to the shooting on Thursday May 23 at about 9:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of South Golden Way, northwest of Highway 285 and Sheridan Boulevard.

According to police, 59 year old Bustaman Kartabrata knew the victims well.

He faces three counts of first-degree murder and felony menacing in the shooting.

The death of the three McDaniels family members occurred at their home blocks away from elementary school, Traylor Academy.

The couple’s young son had escaped the shooting through a second-floor window to a neighbor’s house so he could call 911 and report his mother, father and sister had been shot.

When police arrived, they found two adults – Joseph McDaniels and wife Althea – and a juvenile girl Christine McDaniels with gunshot wounds.

Althea was pronounced dead at the home, while Joseph and Christine were pronounced dead at a hospital.

Denver police arrested the man suspected of the killings, Bustaman Kartabrata, early Friday morning at a home in a northeast Denver, said

Kartabrata, 59, remains in custody on suspicion of three first-degree murder charges.

Joseph Montoya, Denver police investigations division chief, at a Friday afternoon news conference said Kartabrata knew the family. There was no forced entry into the home.

Investigators were still working to determine a possible motive in the shooting.

Christine, the deceased girl attended Traylor Academy.

Denver Public Schools Superintendent Susana Cordova released a statement Friday afternoon about “the loss of three members of the Traylor Academy and Denver Public Schools family.”

“”Our entire school district is saddened by this news. We send our condolences to the family and friends of those who passed away.

Please continue to keep them in your thoughts.”
