The King of Thailand held an awkward ceremony where he named his mistress an official concubine, a royal consort in front of his new wife taken 3 months ago.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand also known as King Rama X, named Major-General Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi the new Royal Noble Consort, the official title for the chief concubine on Sunday, Royal Central reported.
This role has not formally been acknowledged since 1921. This is the first time in the country’s modern history that a monarch has publicly admitted to having more than one partner.
In the televised ceremony, which also fell on Rama X’s 67th birthday, he awarded Sineenat with four medals including the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao, 1st Class and the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant.
Sineenat, who is the King’s former bodyguard, was given the title of “chao khun phra” meaning “royal noble consort” during the ceremony which marked his birthday.
His new wife Queen Suthida, who was sat next to her husband during the televised service, showed no emotion as Vajiralongkorn splashed water on his fancy woman.
The mistress lay on the floor at her lover’s feet during the ceremony, in accordance with Thailand’s royal tradition.
