The Super Falcons have won the 2018 AWCON, after defeating Banyana Banyana of South Africa 4-3 on penalties in Saturday’s final to clinch their 9th title.
Though the Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana met in the group phase, with South Africans emerging 1-0 winners, however the Nigerian team defeated their counterparts in the final game of the women championship.
While Captain Onome Ebi missed the team’s first spot kick, however the quartet of Ngozi Ebere, Rita Chikwelu, Chinwendu Ihezu and Chinaza Uchendu converted their kicks for the Super Falcons to secure Nigeria’s nineth AWCON title.
Social media has been awash with praise for Nigeria, following their record ninth Africa Women’s Cup of Nations title at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday. Already, the Falcons have been promised $10,000 each if they win and they would be happy heading to the female World Cup in France next year as African champions again.
Chances were hard to come by for both nations in the concluding stages of regulation time, which ultimately sent the clash to extra-time. After both sides failed to break the deadlock in the extra 30 minutes, it was left to a penalty shoot-out and it was the Super Falcons who won the 2018 AWCON.
