Nigeria’s Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung’s convoy was involved in a ghastly accident which claimed one life, and left many injured.
The accident occurred on Saturday around Akko village, along Gombe Airport road. Solomon Dalung’s media assistant, Nneka Ikem Anibeze who confirmed the incident, said;
“Please, thank God for us. The convoy of the Minister of youth and sports Barrister Solomon Dalung was involved in a fatal accident in Gombe. The minister is unhurt. Thank you Lord.”
The minister was in Gombe for the elective national congress of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), which took place on Saturday. Sunday Jika, the officer-in-charge, Gombe State Marshal, a local security outfit, was in the minister’s motorcade.
“We received the minister at the airport and on our way back to town a Peugeot 406 car entered the motorcade of the minister hitting the pilot car,” Jika told journalists.
“The Peugeot car went ablaze. We were able to bring out three persons from the Peugeot car while the driver got burnt in the car.
“In the other bus among the minister’s motorcade, we also brought out people. All the injured persons have been taken to Gombe Specialist Hospital and Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.”
A NAN correspondent, who was at the Specialist Hospital and FTH, saw doctors attending to patients of the accident involving Dalung’s convoy. The Deputy Medical Director, FTH Gombe, Dr Zainab Kaltungo, declined comment.
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Godwin Omiko, told NAN that he had yet to be briefed on the accident.
