Ruga settlements: What Wike promised Buhari, herdsmen

The governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has promised the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government that herdsmen will be allowed to lay pipes from Bonny Ocean to the north for their cattle.

Laila News reports that the Rivers state governor disclosed this when he received the founder and president of Throne-Room Trust Ministries, Apostle Nuhu Kure on Saturday, July 6.

The Nigerian government suspended the controversial Ruga initiative on Thursday, July 4.

The Buhari administration had proposed to resolve the clashes between farmers and herdsmen through Ruga settlements but suspended the plan after the idea was greeted by widespread criticism by Nigerians.

After the suspension, the northern youths in response issued a 30-day ultimatum to every southerner residing in the north to vacate unless Ruga is implemented.

Speaking on Ruga settlements for herdsmen, the governor said there was no part of Rivers State that would be given to herdsmen.

Governor Wike maintained that the south-south state will not participate in any settlement programme for herdsmen by whatever name.

His words: “If they want water for the cattle, they can lay pipes from the Bonny Ocean to the far North for their cattle; that is what we can contribute,” Wike said.

“We don’t have lands for any settlement scheme, our land is for commercial agriculture.”

Speaking further, the governor said Nigeria would have ceased to exist if not for the intervention of God.

“God loves Nigeria. If not for God, there would be no Nigeria. With what we are seeing, we need God’s serious intervention.

“We need men of God to continue to pray for this country,” Governor Wike opined.
