The violence witnessed in the Rivers bye-election, forced the Independent National Electoral Commission to suspend Saturday’s House of Assembly bye-election for Port Harcourt Constituency 3. INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Obo Iffanga, said in a statement that the decision was taken based on the violence unleashed by political thugs and security operatives during the exercise.

Iffanga explained that the bye-election began peaceful until miscreants, accompanied by security agents stormed various polling units and disrupted the exercise.

He said, “The election commenced peacefully in all the units with all the INEC personnel (ad hoc and permanent) with all their materials reporting to their duty posts well ahead of time.

“However, midway in to the elections, miscreants and hoodlums, accompanied by security personnel, stormed the various polling units and registration areas.

“They disrupted voting activities, and carted away election materials, including smart card readers and ballot boxes. In addition, many electoral officials were manhandled, injured and held hostage.

“The widespread disruption of the electoral process as reported by our supervisory presiding officers and in accordance with the provisions of Section 26 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), made INEC to suspend the election forthwith.”
