Daenerys’ dragon Rhaegal was shot and killed by Euron’s army during Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4.

Euron’s fleet secretly attacked Dany as she was making her way to King’s Landing. They killed Rhaegal in the process by shooting him in the chest and neck while he was flying around next to Dany.

Watching Daenerys’ dragon Rhaegal splash into the sea and drown was harrowing. He wasn’t turned into an undead zombie dragon.

Is Rhaegal dead?

Rhaegal is dead. Rhaegal death was confirmed by Brienne when she broke the news to Sansa and Jaime at Winterfell toward the end of GOT episode 4, She said:

“One of the dragons was killed.”
