In the early hours of today, a cement carrying truck plying the Ikot Ukpong bridge led it to finally collapse.
The Ikot Ukpong bridge is a border bridge between Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara LGAs of Akwa Ibom State.
After the collapse of the bridge, residents were said to have carted away bags of cement from the truck said to be owned by Unicem.
According to sources, the villagers heard a loud bang, perhaps from the breaking of one of the bridge pillars which was followed by calls for help. Residents were said to have responded swiftly to the cry for help.
“They heard a loud noise as if something heavy and hard has broken, then we began to see people running towards the bridge side.”
“I quickly went outside, and asked what was going on. At that moment, I saw motorcycles conveying bags of cements in quick succession.
“My neighbor who was returning from Obot Akara said a truck fell inside Ikot Ukpong river.
“When I reached the bridge, almost all the cements were stolen except the ones that fell inside the water.”
No death was reported from the accident, although the driver was said to have sustained injuries while trying to get out of the truck.
