R Kelly has been charged with 10 counts of sexual offenses with some including underaged victims. The 52-year RnB singer is expected to show up in court on March 8 in Chicago where he lives.
US media who have court records say the victims are four women who were age 13 and 16 at the time the abuse took place. The charges handed up in an indictment from a grand jury span from 1998 to 2010.
R KELLY ARRESTED 2019:
A warrant has been issued for R Kelly’s arrest, Chicago police say. If convicted, Kelly faces a maximum of seven years in prison for each count.
R Kelly has been facing sexual abuse allegations for two decades now but has never been convicted for any of them.
Speaking with press, the singer’s lawyer stated that he hasn’t received any notification concerning the sexual offenses charges yet. He also stated that R Kelly maintains his innocence.
R KELLY TRIAL 2019:
The charges against R Kelly are coming just months after a documentary ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ showed multiple women speaking up about the abuse they suffered in his hands.
A grand jury had convened in Cook County, Illinois, earlier this month after new allegations and a newly discovered sexual video against Kelly emerged.
Attorney Michael Avenatti had handed over to the State’s Attorney’s Office a videotape that he said showed R Kelly having sex with an underage girl.
“This tape leaves no question as to whether R. Kelly is guilty of multiple sexual, illegal acts against a 14-year-old girl,” he told reporters on Friday.
CNN reports they have seen the VHS tape that appears to show Kelly having sex with a girl who refers to her body parts as 14 years old.
The newly unearthed footage lasts 42 minutes and 45 seconds and is clear and explicit, CNN says.
What is on the video mirrors some of the alleged acts for which Kelly was arrested in a child pornography case in 2002 when he was 35 and then acquitted six years later.
52-year-old R Kelly is expected in court in Chicago, where he lives, on 8 March, which is International Women’s Day. A warrant for Kelly’s arrest has been issued and if convicted, the singer faces a maximum of seven years in prison for each count.
