41-year-old Indian actress, Sangeetha Balan has been arrested in Southern State of Tamil Nadu for allegedly running a prostitution racket, after she was nabbed in her home in state capital Chennai, along with her male partner Sathish, police said yesterday.
When Police raided the resort on the basis of a tip-off, it was reported that three other women were rescued. The other women are reportedly from different states, and they were also allegedly involved in the racket, police said.
The Indian actress who made her acting debut in Tamil film industry with blockbuster Karuppu Roja in 1996, and also became popular on television for her roles in hit shows such as Vani Rani, Chellamay Aval and Valli, was arraigned alongside her partner before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, Egmore.
“We conducted raids at the resort during the weekend and rescued four young girls who revealed that they were lured into prostitution by the actress,’’ a police official said.
Initial police investigation revealed that the Indian actress and Sathish, lure young girls into flesh trade on the assurance that they would be offered roles in Tamil movies and television serials, he said.
“The rescued girls have been sent to a rehabilitation home. A probe has been ordered and we intend to file a charge sheet against the actress and her partner in the case soon.
“The actress took to prostitution in the past couple of years for quick money,’’ the official added.
The busting of high profile prostitution rackets involving film industry faces is not something new. In December 2017, Hyderabad Police had busted a high profile sex-racket and rescued two actresses, one was from Telugu film industry and another from Bengali. In July 2017, Pune Police Crime Branch busted an alleged prostitution racket involving foreigners. The racket was being run under the garb of a spa. Thailand nationals were held for the involvement in the racket and the owner of the spa was booked under various sections of Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act, according to the Indian Express reported.
