An Oyinbo man has taken to twitter to rant on how he has been unable to get Nigerian citizenship after 5 years of residing in the country, despite being married to a Nigerian.
In his post, he wrote that he may have to leave the country in some few months as his contract with his firm is about to end, and he was told he couldn’t use his wife’s nationality to get a Nigerian citizenship because she is a woman.
I may have to leave Nigeria for a few months because of the absurd law that I can’t use my Wife’s nationality to gain citizenship because she’s a woman. Yet if I were a Nigerian man. Marrying her would grant her the ability to gain citizenship here. Second class women.
Reacting to his post, some Nigerians wrote:
*** Oga oyinbo! That’s our immigration law please respect it and live in peace. Every sovereignty state has its law. Please don’t come and add to our social media uproar we have so many we’re dealing with at the moment before our politicians will take advantage of this. Abeg, PEACE!
*** Glad you have the courage to bring this up on this platform. I have a boss who have been in Nig since 1976, married a Nigeria woman yet he is not a citizen. He filled for papers they billed him an amount that can construct another refinery.
*** He is an expatriate… he is making a whole lot of money from his stay here… That’s why he is fighting to become a Nigerian.. it’s not that he really loves Nigeria but he loves the money he is making here.
*** Sorry mate. we have a lot of antiquated laws that needs changing, but our our law makers are so occupied with waiting on the president they forget why they were elected. Yet they take home “Hardship allowance” while d men mixing concrete collect minimum wage.
