Gabriel Ambe, a personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, serving in Gembu, Taraba, was pronounced dead on Thursday at the Federal Medical Centre in Yola, after suffering from Lassa fever.

Confirming the death of the NSCDC officer which is Adamawa state’s first case of Lassa fever, the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Fatima Atiku Abubakar said the state rapid response team have already moved to identify individuals who came into contact with the deceased in order to contain its spread.

Dr. Fatima further said that since the deceased is suspected to have exported the disease from Taraba into Adamawa there are possibilities he had contact with others.

The Information Officer of the health ministry in Adamawa State, Mr Abubakar Muhammed, said 81 others had been quarantined following the development. 45 members of the deceased’s families and other 36 persons including some health workers who had direct contact with the deceased had also been quarantined.

Muhammed further explained that the late Ambe before his death was a Nigerian Secutity and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer working in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba.

‘‘According to the record available, late Ambe fell sick in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area and he was later referred to Adamawa for treatment.

‘‘He was initially admitted at Peace Hospital, a private clinic in Jimeta and after cross examination he was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola where the hospital management confirmed he was Lassa fever positive,’’ Muhammed said

Taraba State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Innocent Vakai, said:

“A rapid response team has already held a meeting and have already divided themselves into various groups beginning from where he came from.”

Few weeks ago, we reported that a Dr. Ndukwu Chizaram reportedly died of Lassa Fever, barely a month after she started working as the female resident doctor in the pediatrics department of the Federal Medical Center FMC Umuahia Abia state.
