Allen’s wife, Shannon Allen gave an emotional testimony about the effects of his brain trauma on their family.

Here is a touching tribute in Allen’s honour from Robert Stokely:

MSG Mark Allen July 21, 1973 – October 12, 2019

American Hero! REST IN PEACE DEAR FRIEND AND PATRIOT.

Photo below is of Mark as he fed his baby daughter, Journey, along with his wife Shannon in Newnan GA April, 2009 when the community threw his unit a going away lunch. And later after he was wounded he regularly came to the Annual Gathering and at other times to Mike’s Loganville Grave. Mark has a son, Cody who lives in Illinois and he and his child are pictured below with Mark, Shannon and Journey.

Mark battled for America in two wars / Iraq 05-06 with my son Mike / E 108 CAV GAARNG, deployed from Griffin GA Armory and Afghanistan / Bravo 2/121 INF GAARNG 09, deployed from Newnan GA Armory.

I will never forget him being at Mike’s Loganville Grave August 15, 2008 and giving me early word he was leaving his safe job at HQ for the GAARNG and returning to the field to get ready to deploy with “his guys” many of whom served with Mike and him in Iraq. The GAARNG 48th Brigade Combat Team were deployed to Afghanistan in May/June of 2009.

On July 8, 2009 while on search and rescue patrol, the patrol he was leading came under withering fire by a larger enemy force. He sustained a gunshot wound to his brain he probably should not have survived that day but for some remarkable medical care by a field medic under fire and then being airlifted into the best medical mission and team the world knows. He lived ten years, 3 months and 4 days before he succumbed to the complications of his traumatic brain injury and wounds. He fought the good fight to the very end!

His wife Shannon, their daughter Journey and his son Cody were the best examples you will ever find of a family labor of love to care for Mark at home all these years as he required 24/7 extensive care. They were joined by other family members, friends and many in the community.

Mark fought to his last breath serving America and his memory will continue that service. He is why America is Free and Home of the Brave. He is a Fallen Hero and his family are now members of the Gold Star Family Circle. God Bless them and thank you for all that you have done. And never shall the name of Mark Allen be forgotten and I will mention it with great respect and reverence to my last breath.
