An Italian woman has been charged with involuntary man slaughter after her baby hit its head and died when she unexpectedly gave birth.
According to local media, the woman claims she didn’t know she was pregnant until she went into labour, leading to the tragic turn of events.
She was arrested in Acilia, a town south of Rome, and initially held for attempted murder after doctors said the infant’s injuries may have been due to a blow to the head with an object.
Her charges were later changed and the woman is being held under house arrest.
According to her, she did not know she was expecting and the baby was still attached to the umbilical cord when it fell on the floor.
She said her mother found her and quickly wrapped the baby up in a towel before calling the emergency services.
News1 reports paramedics found the two women in a room covered in blood.
They told them “it fell” and the baby was taken to the Bambino Gesu Hospital in the Vatican City.
Tragically, it died two days later.
Another news outlet called Ansa reports the baby suffered cranial trauma from the fall.
