Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH) Yola has been closed down indefinitely, as soldiers and anti-riot police were deployed to the school to curb the riot that broke out on Sunday after a student identified as Daves Wanjez, was killed and properties were destroyed in the process.
It was gathered that the riot which was initially credited to MAUTECH student union government leadership tussle, was however ignited by a blasphemous comment about Prophet Muhammad the student killed left on a WhatsApp group. The alleged blasphemy led to protests and calls for the school authority to take action.
NAN reported that the Dean of Students Affairs, Haruna Lawal, said;
‘’In the wake of the crisis, some students leaving in Sangere village that houses majority of the students, engaged in fisticuff with the residents of the area during which one of the student was injured.
The injured student was later taken to the university clinic for treatment and later transferred to a nearby hospital FMC in Yola, where he gave the ghost.”
A church was allegedly attacked, their music instruments were burnt and the worshipers scampered for safety.
Facebook user, Muawaiya Abubakar who shared the story on his page wrote;
Its NOT ABOUT SUG election.
What happened in Mautech yesterday is not about politics its something more than politics, we can’t play with peoples religion its very bad. The below picture was what really caused the whole problem in the school.
JUST one boy send more that 20,000 students, 5000 staff including professors of peace and conflicts resolutions and many more back home.
Religion is not something to Play with.
Let us embrace peace and stop religion abuse next time.
Dear friends I did not post the picture Daves Wanjez’s ( the initiator of MAUTECH crisis) to raise arguments of any kind. As an activist I did that to let the people know the reality of what transpired between both religion.
It is on this note that I once again Condemn the incident in totality.
We are better together and human before any other thing.
However if the earlier post keep on generating sentimental comment I will delete it permanently.
Keep your sentiments aside.
