The accident resulted in beloved Father Mathew Vellankal death and Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong death.
This has sent shock waves, tears in St. Bonaventure Catholic community who released a statement that read:
It is with great shock and sadness that we inform our St. Bonaventure community that our pastor, Fr. Mathew Vellankal, died in an an automobile accident yesterday in Colusa County.
We will be remembering Fr. Mat in a special way at all of our Masses this weekend. Let perpetual light shine upon him.
Salesian Province of Dimapur – IND also released a statement that read:
Dear friends, it is with sad heart that I write this to inform you of our Archbishop Dominic Jala and Fr. Mathew Vellankal passed away in a fatal car crash with a semi truck in California.
They were on the way to Clearlake CA.
Fr. Joseph Pareckatt is in serious condition in the hospital.
This news was confirmed by Fr. G. Alangadan of Oakland. May God grant eternal life and the Joys of heaven to our Archbishop and Fr. Vellankal.

Mathew Vellankal Colusa County car accident – how it happened
Mathew Vellankal and Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong were traveling to Clearlake in California along with Father Joseph Parekkatt, another Indian priest.
Tragically, their car collided with a semi-truck in Colussa Country, California.

Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong and Father Mathew Vellankal were travelling in a red car and they died after their car collided with a semi truck in Colussa Country, California.
According to a press note from the diocese of Oakland, Father Parekkatt was seriously wounded but he is stable now at the hospital.
Archbishop Jala was 68 years old, Father Vellankal was 50.
Father Vellankal, a missionary in Oakland Diocese and the pastor of St. Isidore Parish in Danville, California since 2016, was a native of Kerala, South India.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
