Alahassan, of no fixed address, was also in possession of a knife, which he showed to staff before leaving the scene.

Detective Constable Andy Garland, of Croydon CID, said: “Attacks like this on people in their place of work are totally unacceptable.

“Alahassan and another man who later admitted to his part in the attack were located shortly after the incident by officers who conducted an area search, and both men are now in jail, all for a few seconds of sudden unnecessary violence.”

Police were called to the Church Street shop just before 5pm to reports of a disturbance.

Members of staff informed them that two men had become aggressive, assaulting one member of staff.

Alahassan also threw a salt shaker at the victim during the altercation.

The victim was taken to a south London hospital by the London Ambulance Service with a broken jaw and facial injuries.

Mobile phone footage captured by a member of the public helped identify the attackers by their clothing.

The two suspects were arrested a short time later in The Queens Gardens.

Alhassan was found guilty of assault by beating, and possession of an offensive weapon following a trial at Croydon Crown Court which concluded on Friday, October 12.

His accomplice was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for causing grievous bodily harm in April 2018.
