Lopetegui replaces Zidane at Real Madrid

Reigning European champions Real Madrid have appointed current Spain national team coach Julen Lopetegui as their manager from next season.

Lopetegui, 51, is set to succeed Zinedine Zidane who stepped down after leading the La Liga giants to three straight UEFA Champions League titles.

The Spanish giants announced Lopetegui signing on their official website on Tuesday. The said;

“Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of Real Madrid after the 2018 World Cup,”

“Real Madrid C. F. announces that Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of the first team during the next three seasons.

“Julen Lopetegui will join the club after the participation of the Spanish team in the World Cup, after two years of leading the national team.”

Julen Lopetegui Argote is a Spanish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper, and is the manager of the Spain national team.

He played 149 games in La Liga over 11 seasons, appearing in the competition for Real Madrid, Logroñés, Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano. He added 168 matches in Segunda División with three clubs, and represented Spain at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Lopetegui started working as a manager in 2003, and spent several years in charge of Spain’s youth teams. He led the under-19 and under-21 sides to European titles

Lopetegui was appointed Spain coach in 2016. He was previously FC Porto manager.
