Landlord steals tenant’s jewelry and cash worth 1.8million

A landlord has been arraigned for allegedly stealing his tenant’s jewelry and cash worth N1.8 million in Ogun state.

The 35-year-old identified as, Sunday Sorinola, was arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Mattew Famuyiwa, told the court that the Soriola who is facing a count charge of stealing, committed the offence on October 11, 2018, at about 8.15p.m at Adigbe area in Abeokuta.

Famuyiwa said that the accused broke into the room of the complainant, his tenant, and stole gold jewellery worth N1.8 million and cash amount of N562, 850. According to the prosecutor, the complainant left her apartment to purchase recharge card for her mobile phone.

“Before she returned the accused had broke into her room and stole the items,” the prosecutor said.

He said that after the incident, the complainant reported the matter at Adigbe Police Station after which the accused was apprehended. The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge against him. The Magistrate, Mr Olalekan Oke, granted the accused bail of N600,000 with two sureties in like sum. Oke said that one of the sureties must own a landed property and must be gainfully employed, and reside within the court’ s jurisdiction.

The prosecutor said that the sureties must also show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government. He, however, adjourned the case until February 5 for hearing.

  1. Why was he not pleased guilty is that he did not commit the crimes or the lady was lying against him, pls Nigeria judiciary come out plain all this cut and join story I don’t get it.

  2. If he is actually guilty then it’s a shame. How can a landlord steal from a tenant without shame. Maybe he has even been doing that, just that this one was too much.
    It’s possible that the landlord had spare keys to the rented apartment. Let’s be security conscious too. On no account should a landlord gain access to an apartment he has rented out. The tenants are entitled to their own privacy too.

  18. The tenant cannot just conclude that the landlord is guilty of the stealing except she has a clean proof or evidence of her claims.

  19. Let proper investigation be carried out and if found guilty he should be punished accordingly.
