Kenyan Olympic hero, Kipchoge Keino, who reportedly abused his former role as head of Kenya’s Olympic Committee to siphon off about US$25,000 for his son to go to Rio, has surrendered to the police and will be facing corruption charges.

The Kenyan Olympic hero, Kipchoge Keino, who inspired a generation of athletes in his country, is said to be involved in the misuse of funds intended for Kenya’s Olympic team at the Rio Games two years ago.

Kenya’s ambassador to Austria, Hassan Wario, who is also a former sports minister also surrendered himself to the police and is expected to be arraigned in court this week alongside Kipchoge Keino.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist who is the former National Olympic Committee of Kenya president, might however be exonerated from blame after agreeing to testify against his co-accused. He is standing trial alongside six other former Sports ministry officials implicated in the loss of the funds, including buying air tickets that were not used.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji approved the prosecution of Keino on six counts of abuse of office and four counts of willful failure to comply with laws relating to public funds management.

Others facing the charges are former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario (current Ambassador to Austria), former Finance Officer Patrick Nkabu and former Director of Administration Haron Komen.
