Bartolotta had battled diabetes which he called “a slow creep, debilitating disease” for 30 years. In 2013, he underwent a kidney transplant, saying his “life changed overnight” and called it a miracle.

He had then become a transplant advocate and hoped that his story inspired others to become organ donors.

Co-owner of The Bartolotta Restaurants died in his sleep.

This was revealed in a statement the restaurant group shared Tuesday. Joe was 60 years old.

A statement released by the restaurant group says:

“Joe is beloved by the Milwaukee community for his hospitality heart, generosity and love of all. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

Bartolotta started the restaurant group with his brother Paul in 1993. Their first restaurant, Ristorante Bartolotta, opened in Wauwatosa.

The restaurant group now operates 15 restaurants and catering facilities, including six fine dining establishments, two upscale-casual concepts, two upscale food courts, a pizzeria, and four exclusive catering facilities.

Bartolotta was a longtime board member of the Milwaukee tourism board. The group said in a public statement:

“He was an active community member who gave tremendous support to Milwaukee’s hospitality industry. He was a wonderful human being who will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Bartolotta family.”

For the past 25 years, Bartolotta’s name has been synonymous with fine and quality dining in southeastern Wisconsin. He oversaw some of the area’s most successful eateries, including Ristorante Bartolotta, Lake Park Bistro, Harbor House and Bachhus.

In 2013, Bartolotta told WUWM in an interview that:

“Part of my responsibility is to not only enhance my life and my family’s life, but to enhance the people around us and bring everybody’s standard of living up a little bit. I take that very, very seriously.”

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
