Approval for the hike in tariff was given by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, as the increase which varies, based on different consumer classes, took effect from January 1, 2021, The Punch reports.

The NERC announced the tariff hike in its December 2020 minor review of the Multi-Year Tariff Order and Minimum Remittance Order obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday.

The tariff increase is taking effect just two months after the government through NERC implemented a hike in November 2020, which saw widespread opposition.

Labour unions and the Federal Government had been at loggerhead following increase in the pump price of premium motor spirit as well as the increase in electricity tariff.

After series of outrage and outright rejection by consumers who cited poor power supply and the impacts of Covid-19, DisCos had in October last year started the implementation of a service-based reflective tariff (SRT) structure after backing by an approval from President Muhammadu Buhari.

The MYTO order containing the latest tariff hike, Order NERC/225/2020, was signed by the new Chairman of NERC, Sanusi Garba, and it supersedes the previous Order NERC/2028/2020.

Providing reasons for the latest tariff hike, the commission said it considered the 14.9 per cent inflation rate rise in November 2020 and foreign exchange of N379.4/$1 as of December 29, 2020.

Nigerians are currently lamenting on social media, saying the hike comes just two months after the government increased the electricity price in November 2020, coupled with the covid-19 disease in the country, insecurity situation in the country and high poverty rate in the country.

@hauwa_ojeifo: The Nigerian government will do anything but cut down the cost of government. They’ll hike electricity tariff, increase VAT, charge you for inefficiencies and more.

It’s now to pray for them to die out because to legitimately demand better, you might get killed.

@Chysohm: Electricity has not improved ,it has never improved but you are increasing tariff. How are we going to grow as a country bikonu?

@akinsanyajoe: This electricity tariff hike is crazy!!! The last increase caused my consumption to jump to 16,000 and I am not running a factory out of my house.

@_ohotu_: Can’t stop thinking about the many ways Nigeria keeps trying to kill us or pull us back.

Now, another increase in electricity tariffs. People are struggling so so hard as it is. Why
