I have not resigned from APC – Bolaji Abdullahi

Bolaji Abdulllahi is still a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he made this known to Premium Times Tuesday night.

Reports that Mr Abdullahi, a former minister of youth and sports development, has abandoned the ruling party and toed the line of his mentor, Senate President Bukola Saraki, dominated social media Tuesday night.

“But I have not tendered my resignation,” Mr Abdullahi said. “And I did not tell anyone I have done so.”

Mr Abdullahi’s absence during the regular Monday meeting of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) fueled the speculations that he may have concluded arrangements to leave the party.

Defending his absence at the NWC meeting, the APC spokesman told journalists at the party secretariat that he actually notified the party’s national leadership of his absence from the meeting.

“It is not true that I have resigned and let me emphasis that there is no iota of truth in that report. I can understand where the speculation is coming from, perhaps because I was absent during the NWC meeting on Monday.

“However, the speculators didn’t know that I told my colleagues that I was away in Kwara State.

“I want to put it on record that I came through the front door and if I want to leave, I will leave through the front door,” he said.

Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, who was reelected spokesperson for the APC at the party’s national convention last month, has been a key ally of Mr Saraki for years.

In 2014, he resigned from President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet as sports minister, after Mr Saraki left the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party for the APC, which was then the newly-emerged main opposition.

Mr Saraki announced his resignation from the APC Tuesday evening, after months of heavy speculation that he would not remain in the ruling party until the 2019 elections.

News of his defection came virtually at the same time as that of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, another key loyalist of the Senate President.

All federal lawmakers from Kwara, both the Senate and the House of Representatives, joined the PDP last week, in anticipation of Mr Saraki’s move.

Their choices are a major highlight of the lingering wave of defection rattling the APC, as alignment and realignment intensify for the 2019 elections.

Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, widely deemed as already out of the APC, insisted that he had not resigned, although he did not rule out the possibility.

Two sources close to him, however, said he would resign within the next 24 hours.

“I would be surprised if he does not leave the party within the next day or two at most,” the source, well-informed of Mr Abdullahi’s plans, said
