The approval followed the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.

The report was considered at the plenary on Thursday with the lawmakers approving the amendments to three clauses ‎in the Act, as recommended in the report.

One of the clauses deleted May 29 as Democracy Day and replaced the date with June 12.

June 12 was when the 1993 election was annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. The INEC of the day was not allowed to declare the result officially.

  8. I hope a new President will still be sworn in on the 29th of May. An extra minute with Buhari is unacceptable.

  9. I still wonder why the then military ruler Ibrahim Babangida cancelled a credible election and ordered INEC not to announce the result! I believe is for selfish reasons.

  10. I think it’s insignificant anyway. Though MKO was an upright politician during his year. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

  20. Finally signed into law! This will infact enhance the fact that June 12 though was annulled but it initiated the process to a new era of democracy in nigeria

  21. This is a good. But what of other more pressing issues? What are they waiting for before passing it?

  22. Its a welcome development. Abiola sacrificed his life for democracy. He is indeed a national hero and setting June 12 apart to celebrate our departing hero is not too much.

  23. Public holidays has not improved us ,we don’t need more,it’s for countries that have achieved tangible results that should be talking about holidays(Democracy day)

  24. That is a good news to Nigerians and mostly to the Yoruba’s. Is a welcome development that at last justice is served for a good man who was denied of being the first Democratic leader and killed. Hope the family of Abiola feel justice is served.

  25. That’s Good news for Nigeria.to honour those that has work hard for better Nigeria.. God bless Nigeria.

  26. June 12 is said to be the first free and fair election in this country, probably the only one. So I think it’s a good move

  27. That’s good but it should not effect from next year please. Buhari or whoever is not staying there beyond May 29.

  28. Does it matter at all, presently Nigeria Democracy is as dead as dry wood. But I trust us well, we are good at ceremonial practices

  29. Since their main motive for moving democracy day to June 12 is to celebrate the win of Manhood Abiola becoming President, then it’s not bad. Its ok

  30. That is not an achievement. It will better our economy, it will not create job. If you people so much value Abiola he should be named a president and pay him all his entitlements.

  31. That is good and also the best to honour a prominent man.
So does that mean we will be having the handling over and change of government on every 12th of June now?

  32. Our main focus should be on how to raise the standard of living of the masses not a day to pick for public holidays

  33. Any day the government wants us to observe it, we will. Its great to honour an icon with a day though.

  34. Nationwide is really incredible for he did awesomely when he was in existence he deserve to be remembered and honoured.

  35. Mushrooms Abiola, acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election died in prison to set the way for the democracy we now enjoy today so that’s a good step in the right direction.

  36. That’s a good one,we can use that day to remember him,he’s not the kind of man to be forgotten easily.

  37. Present President just honored Late MKO Abiola,I pray Atiku should not play politics with d June 12 as president Buhari just did
