Gunmen kill trader for his alleged refusal to sell cigarette in Ilorin

A cigarette seller identified simply as MM, was reportedly killed by gunmen numbering up to five in his shop at Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin, over his refusal to sell cigarette to them.

It was gathered that MM was shot in the head by one of the suspected cultists, who were enraged when he told them that he had no cigarette, even when one of them pointed to a pack in the shop.

Sources told Punch’s correspondent, that MM told the suspected cultists that the remaining cigarette pack had been paid for by someone and that he could not accept money for it again. However the suspects were enraged, when the trader told them that the buyer was on his way to collect it.

They reportedly shot the deceased on the head, and then entered the shop and took the pack of he cigarette while the victim was in the throes of death.

Kwara State Police Public Relations Offier, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, who confirmed the incident said;

“I learnt that there was a killing in Gaa Akanbi area yesterday night, but we are still investigating the incident.”

Few years ago, a 21-year old man identified as Lucky Igbineyi was remanded in prison custody for allegedly killing his in-law, Blessing Obazee over a stick of cigarette.

Lucky was said to have stabbed his in-law in the stomach severally. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Oluwaseun Olatoye, had informed an Evboriaria Magistrate court that Lucky committed the crime on September 3 at No 40, Enoruwa Street, Off Upper Sakponba Road in Ikpoba-Okha local government.

Olatoye said the accused person came to stay in the same room with the deceased. He explained that the deceased (Obazee) refused to give the accused person the cigarette he was smoking, and further told the accused person to go and buy his.
