Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike during a press briefing has stated why he rejected the Federal Government palliative to the state.
According to Nyesom Wike, if the Federal government cannot buy from the foodstuffs produced in Rivers state from the local farmers to empower them, the would not accept foodstuffs like Garri and yam to be brought into the state.
Gov Wike insists that the farmers in Rivers state do not use fertilizers and there are several communities producing some of the food stuff the Federal government plans bringing into the state as palliative which he does not agree is in any way helping the state but considers it an insult.
The governor said: “You can’t just send rice to us without asking if that is what we want. Rivers people prefer garri to rice. In fact, the rice is expired.”
“You don’t have to lose your dignity because you are poor. Come to think of it, we are not the only state that rejected the Federal Government palliatives.
“Oyo State rejected it, Akwa Ibom State rejected it. They are not edible. They even told us to go to Cross River State to carry a trailer-load of rice. I said no, I cannot go to Cross River to carry rice for Rivers people.”
