Golfer dead is Malaysian professional golfer Arie Irawan, the golfer found dead in China where he was competing in the Sanya Championship.
According to a PGA Tour statement, Arie Irawan was found dead in his hotel room on the resort island of Hainan on Sunday morning.
What killed Arie Irawan, golfer dead in China?
Early indications say Arie Irawan’s death was from natural causes. Arie Irawa was found unresponsive on his bed by his roommate, American Kevin Techakanokboon.
Arie died in his sleep, Malaysia’s The Star newspaper reported.
The PGA statements adds that the coroner has not completed his report.
Irawan had been competing in the PGA Tour Series-China’s Sanya Championship, where he missed the 36-hole cut but had remained on-site. He was 28 years old.
According to the PGA Tour, Greg Carlson, PGA TOUR Series-China executive director, said:
“Arie’s roommate, American Kevin Techakanokboon, who had already awoken and was getting ready for his final round, noticed Irawan was unresponsive in his bed.
“This is just a terrible tragedy that affects all of us who are part of a very tight-knit family here in China.
This is a tragic day in the Tour’s history, and it would not have been right to play the final round.”
Out of respect for the family, officials cancelled the final round of the Sanya Championship, the tournament becoming a 54-hole event. American Trevor Sluman was declared the winner after he led at the 54-hole mark on 18-under
Arie Irawan attended the University of Tulsa on a golf scholarship. He turned professional in 2013 and won two Asian Developmental Tour events in his seven-year career.
The married 28-year-old died after he missed the halfway cut at the event, the second on the PGA Tour China Series, on the island of Hainan.
